It’s Thursday afternoon going on 4 o’clock and I realized something…
I hadn’t written this week’s blog post! In fact…
I hadn’t even picked out a topic for it yet!
Then I started thinking about what a challenging week it had been. Running a business – especially a digital marketing agency – isn’t for the faint of heart.
Especially when you’re a very small operation like we are.
But running a business of any size is hard. Non-business owners just don’t understand.
Employees (for the most part) get to leave their work at work when they go home for the day.
As I sit here writing, my son is doing dishes in the kitchen, just a few steps away from my home office.
It’s hard to leave work at work when you work from home.
We try to offer valuable digital marketing tips on our blog as much as we can. For this week’s tip, I just want to tell you this…
You don’t have to do it all alone.
The Challenges of Running a Business
I’m tired just thinking of all the things I do in a week’s time.
In fact, I might need a nap after I write this blog post.
As a small business owner, here are just some of the things that fill my days:
- Making sure the finances are all tracked and updated.
- Sending invoices to clients.
- Fulfilling client orders, which means writing copy/content, editing, and sometimes a little graphic design.
- Making sure others on my team have something they’re working on.
- Following up on projects in progress.
- Doing outreach and working leads.
- Taking care of my side projects.
- Keeping up with our social media pages and posts.
- Checking and responding to emails.
- Going to meetings (both on Zoom and in-person, at times).
- Keeping our project management system updated.
- Staying updated on my computer maintenance.
- Business coaching tasks for clients.
- Marketing tasks for our agency.
Think about all the things you do in the course of a week.
- Human resources
- Customer service
And those are just some of the things we all do.
You can’t forget things like commiserating with one of your employees when she needs to take time off because her dad is in the hospital or her kids are sick.
Those types of things take a lot of mental “work” too.
Running a business is hard work.
What Happens During Your Downtime?
Sometimes I wonder – what exactly is downtime?
Even though my office hours are officially 9-5, Monday through Friday, it’s rare when I’m not messaging with a client in the early morning or late evening hours.
I have clients who text me at night and on the weekends.
For many business owners, that’s just how it goes. And I’m certainly not complaining! That’s just how it is when you run a business sometimes.
You’re constantly thinking about what you got done today and what you’re going to do tomorrow.
You might sit down to watch TV at the end of the day, but your mind keeps straying to that ever-growing list of things you need to accomplish.
It’s exhausting. Exhilarating, for sure. But exhausting just the same.
What do you do outside of running a business?
For me, I homeschool my son. I serve on our local county Libertarian Party Executive Committee. I go to church. And I try to squeeze in something of a social life if I get a chance.
All of these things take up a lot of space in our heads.
Are you tired yet? I know I am…
But I think that’s what running your business alone – on top of doing everything else you need to do – does to you.
But What if You Have Help?
Today, I shared this photo of me with my daughter on my social media pages.
Once upon a time, I did everything for my agency myself. I was a one-woman show, and I was proud of that…
For about 10 minutes.
As the business grew and as I got busier, I knew that I had two choices. I could either…
Go insane, or…
I could enlist some help.
If you’re familiar with our agency, then you’ve probably interacted with my daughter, Cassidy before.
She’s like a breath of fresh air! And I couldn’t do what I do without her.
Not in a million years.
I was thinking about that today and how thankful I am for her. And it got me thinking about you.
So many business owners try to do everything on their own. They do more than just own the business. They’re also:
- The accountant
- The cleaning crew
- The trainer
- The HR person
- The marketing expert
Maybe it’s time for you to let some of that go.
If you’ve been thinking the same thing, Colwell Creative is here to help.
