3 Signs Your Business Needs a Marketing Overhaul

A city skyline at night with a lot of traffic

Far too many business owners view their marketing efforts with a one-and-done mindset.

Even in the good old days, that method wasn’t effective, and as SEO has progressed over the years, it’s definitely not effective now.

Ongoing marketing is the key to staying ahead of the competition.

But how do you know if it’s time for a marketing overhaul for your business? Let’s talk about it.

You Have a Traffic and Conversion Problem

Maybe you’ve noticed that you’re still getting the traffic you once did, but the leads just aren’t converting.

Or, it could be that your traffic has died down altogether.

Either way, this is a serious issue and one that needs addressing right away.

Otherwise, your business will continue to suffer.

If your leads aren’t converting but your traffic is still high, it’s time to take a fresh look at what website visitors see when they’re on your homepage.

Here are a few things to assess:

  • Is it easy for visitors to contact you? If not, try putting a button right at the top of your homepage. And while you’re at it, sprinkle a few more throughout your homepage.

  • Does your “top-of-the-scroll” messaging hit home with potential customers? Can they quickly and easily figure out what you do and that you’re the pro to help them reach their goals?

  • Is your content interesting enough to keep people on the page, or will they click off your site and go check out your competitor’s site?

If your traffic has died down, your SEO is probably the culprit.

When was the last time you updated your keywords, meta-titles, and meta-descriptions?

If you have more of a “local” business, it might even be time to brush up on your local SEO.

Adding some location pages to your site can make a huge difference.

Your Social Media Engagement is Waning

I get it.

Keeping up with social media while you’re trying to run your business is hard work.

Actually, it’s more like its own full-time job.

But if you’re noticing a decrease in revenue, it could be because your social media isn’t doing what it should be doing.

Whether you post once a week or daily, it could be time to shake things up. Here are some tips to help:

  • Take a look at the social media platforms you’re currently on. Are they the right ones for your business? Are there others that might be more effective?

  • What are you posting about? Is every post about selling or is it about your customer and their needs?

  • Are you using engaging graphics, videos, Reels, and other tools to improve your engagement? Or are your posts mainly text?

A local business owner shared his thoughts with me about how social media works for his business, and I’d like to share them with you here:

“We have a website which absolutely brings traffic and gives an established feel to the brand. 85-90% of our marketing is social media, however. When people see our advertising, they then like to check out our website to validate us and collect more information. I believe a website and social media marketing walk hand in hand for optimal results.” ~ Terry Keegan, Owner, Green Roof Technologies.

Your Ad Marketing Isn’t Working Like it Used to

A lot of companies dive into the world of ad marketing with little to no guidance.

Their goal is to make fast money, and they figure spending a few bucks on some ads is a good way to do it.

Sometimes, ad marketing can be extremely effective.

But if your ad marketing strategies aren’t working like they used to, it’s time to take a step back and assess.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Is your targeting right? Last year, I kept getting an ad for a politician who wasn’t running in my area. It turns out that he was running ads all over the world and he was only running for a seat on our county’s legislature. He spent a lot of money on ads that produced nothing. (He lost, by the way)

  • Are you changing your ads regularly? If you’re running Facebook ads, you should know that people get tired of seeing the same old things in their newsfeeds. If you’re trying to run Google ads, it could be that you need to switch up your keywords or change your messaging.

  • Is your branding outdated? It could simply be that you’ve had the same logo for 10 years and it’s time to go for something more modern and attention-grabbing.

Ad marketing can work, but it has to be done right. Otherwise, you’re just throwing money away, which hurts your bottom line even more.
